Post-Surgical Rehabilitation
 
If you are going to take the time to get a surgical procedure done it only makes sense to choose wisely regarding your rehabilitation.
 
Most good physicians will tell you that the physical therapist is the most key component in determining what level of function you will get back to following a surgery. They are able to do amazing things these days but how well you are after the surgery is less about the surgery and more about what is done during the recovery.
 
There are several key components, which we focus on at Revolution Physical Therapy, that ensure the best chance of returning to the best that you can possibly be. Individual assessment and treatment plan tailored to meet the needs of each and every individual.
 
 
 
Fixing the cause of the problem:
Although the surgeon repairs the tissue, the cause of the injured tissue was movement. It could have been bad posture, a car accident or fall, but these are all movement related in origin. Our PT’s will try to determine if any faulty movement patterns could be to blame for making the person more susceptible to injury and the subsequent surgery.
 
Eliminating inflammation and swelling caused by the surgical procedure:
Inflammation and swelling are normal following a surgical procedure but often excessive. This excess causes pain and limits movement as well as slows down the healing process. This is the first step and most important factor to address. The patient must be educated in the best methods and techniques to eliminate post-operative swelling.
 
Restoring proper movement patterns:
Physical therapy is not just about exercise, it is about using exercise to teach people how to move their body properly to enhance movement capability and prevent future injury.
 
Evaluation Based Protocol:
Most surgeons utilize a time based protocol. This is because they do not trust the physical therapist’s ability to properly progress the patient in a safe manner. The best physical therapists use an evaluation based protocol. There is more to recovery than time. Our evaluation looks at each individual differently to determine how they should be progressed through their recovery.
